Karl Friedrich Gauss
(1777-1855). Uno de los tres más grandes matemáticos de todos los tiempos. Nació en Brunswick, Alemania, y llegó a ser conocido como "el príncipe de las matemáticas". A la edad de 19 años demostró, por vez primera, que un círculo puede ser dividido en diecisiete arcos iguales por medio de geometría elemental. En 1801 publicó "Disquisiciones matemáticas" sobre la teoría de los números y seis años más tarde fue designado profesor y director del Observatorio de Gotinga. Formuló el método de los mínimos cuadrados, enuncié una solución para las ecuaciones binomias, demostró la ley de la reciprocidad de los cuadrados y estableció la teoría matemática de la electricidad. El Gausio, unidad electromagnética de inducción magnética, fue nombrada así en su honor. Llevó a cabo investigaciones en astronomía, óptica, magnetismo y electricidad.
